Many beginners wonder how to be successful with affiliate marketing and that is exactly what this article is going to be about.

We are going to cover 10 fundamental principles for achieving success with affiliate marketing. At the end I will even tell you how you can start with affiliate marketing for free, so stay until the end.

When done right, affiliate marketing can be your best source of passive income. That is why you need to understand the basic principles of affiliate marketing. After that it should be much easier for you to build a successful affiliate marketing business.

In affiliate marketing, you are paid only when the reader takes some kind of action. It can be signing up for a program or purchasing a product.

But how do you actually do that?

This post is for those of you who already have an idea of what affiliate marketing is. I will share tips and tricks that’s going to help you be successful with affiliate marketing.

Without further ado let’s find out how to be successful with affiliate marketing.

#1 Target a specific audience

The first and most important thing that you need to do if you want to be successful with affiliate marketing, is to target the right audience. You need to be specific and know exactly who it is that you’re trying to sell to.

Try to understand your audience’s needs. What problems do they have? What can you offer in order to solve their problems?

A common mistake that many affiliate marketers do is that they try to sell to everyone.

Remember, if you’re trying to sell to everyone – you’re not selling to anyone.

There is no one product that is perfect for everybody. Be honest with your audience and tell them who the product is right for and what problems can it solve.

Focus on a specific niche market that is not too broad. For example, if you are in the wealth niche, don’t target a too big audience. A much more effective strategy is to target a specific group of people within the bigger audience.

Niche down to a sub niche. If we take the example above, that could be targeting people who are interested in real estate or people who need help with their money management. It can also be people who want to make money on the internet. In that case you would need to niche down even more because there are thousands of ways to make money online.

This leads me to the second tip, which is…

#2 Know your products and know your audience

Knowing your products well is just as important as understanding your audience.

Take your time and learn about the products and services that you are promoting. If you know a lot about the products that you are offering, you will seem more credible in your audience’s eyes.

Being able to provide valuable information about your product is crucial, but understanding your audience’s needs is equally important. What issues do they face? How can the product that you are offering solve their problem?

Knowing your products and knowing your audience are two things that go hand-in-hand.

If you know all the details about your product, you can serve your visitors with the right information. This creates trust between you and your audience, which will make them more likely to buy from you.

Remember, you are not there to sell. You are there to provide value to people and help them solve a problem.

Make sure that the products you are recommending are relevant to your visitors and never recommend products that you wouldn’t use yourself if you had the same problem as your target audience.

Always put yourself in your audience’s shoes!

#3 Optimize your content for SEO

Many beginners who don’t have money to invest, make the mistake of starting with PPC or pay-per-click traffic directly. This is paid traffic and you are 100% guaranteed to lose money in the beginning especially if you don’t know what you are doing.

It is much more effective to learn how to drive traffic organically through SEO or Search Engine Optimization. This means that people type something in Google and Google gives them the most relevant information in the search results.

When people find you naturally on the internet, they are much more likely to buy from you because they are already searching for a product or a solution to their problems.

Pay-per-click campaigns are for those with a lot of experience and know what they are doing. That is why generating organic traffic through SEO is a much better approach if you are a beginner.

#4 Focus on quality content

Quality content is the foundation of your website. No matter how much traffic you get, if your content isn’t providing value to people, they won’t stay on your website and therefore won’t buy from you.

High quality content should be your number one priority. Make sure that the content you create contains useful information that is relevant to your audience.

If people don’t find value in your content, they won’t trust you and I think we all know that we don’t buy from people that we don’t trust.

Even if you follow all the steps that I share in this article, if your content isn’t high quality, none of the tips I give you will work.

#5 Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket

Having a product that you really like and that will benefit your target audience is the thing that you should go for if you want to be successful with affiliate marketing.

But, it is important to understand that you shouldn’t rely on only one product or only one merchant. It is always good to have a plan B, in case something happens.

A good example of that is Amazon that cut down their commissions. Many people relied only on Amazon, because it is such a big and legit website that people trust. But recently ( April 21 2020) Amazon decided to decrease their affiliate’s commissions with more than 50%. This resulted in the revenue of many people’s businesses dropping by half.

You shouldn’t only rely on one product or one merchant. Try to find products that are equally good or even better than the current products that you are promoting. Another good idea is to also work with different merchants and promote products from different merchants within your niche.

If something goes wrong with one of them, you can always fall back on another and that will not affect your business that much.

#6 Always include Affiliate Disclosure

Something that many beginner affiliate marketers don’t know is that they need to disclose that they are using affiliate links in their content. This is a requirement from FTC (The Federal Trade Commissions).

You need to follow that requirement in order to receive payments. If you don’t disclose, you are running the risk of not receiving the commissions.

So don’t let your hard work be for nothing. Take those 2 extra minutes and write an affiliate disclosure.

The affiliate disclosure should appear in any posts or pages that contain affiliate links and it should be visible for your readers.

If you are a part of the Amazon Associates Program, you should use this exact disclosure phrase ‘’As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases’’.

Other than that, just write something like ‘’This page contains affiliate links, which means that if you decide to make a purchase through them, I will receive a commission’’.

You can customize it however you like, but just make sure that it is clear for your readers that you are using affiliate links.

#7 Stay on top of the trends

Staying informed and updating your knowledge constantly is very important if you want to be successful with affiliate marketing.

You need to always spend time learning and embracing the changes in Internet marketing. That is how you will become a super affiliate.

The internet marketing methods are never constant. They keep changing all the time and you need to be aware if a major change happens that can affect your business.

Read a lot and get new knowledge every day!

#8 Have patience and don’t give up

The biggest reason why people don’t succeed with affiliate marketing is that they give up too soon. They want immediate success but they need to understand that success won’t happen overnight and they need to have patience.

If it was that easy, don’t you think that everyone would be wealthy and successful?

You can’t get something out of nothing. You need to work hard now in order to see the money coming in the future.

The success of others tells you that it is possible to be successful with affiliate marketing. Working hard, dedicating time and having the right knowledge can get you to the same level of success that others have achieved.

Set realistic goals and have realistic expectations already from the beginning. They say that the right mentality stands for 80% of your success. The remaining 20% is the hard work and the strategies that you use in order to succeed.

You won’t become a successful affiliate marketer overnight, but don’t let this discourage you.

    You get into an interesting discussion on the differences between knowing your audience and knowing your product. I’ve found it is easy to wander off course in this general area or even get the sense that I might not have a clear notion of where I am going. After all most of us start out with a niche idea and only a vague notion of what the site will look like when it is fully built out – if it ever will be fully built out. The process itself means we discover as we go along.

    My experience is that I started with some ideas of the content I would create but then as I started writing, it inevitably turns out different. I am very much still finding my way. So much so that I am not really bothered right now with what affiliate programs I will join and what products I will promote I am exclusively focused on the content and on engaging with and interacting with people who come to my site.

    Even there, because most of my commenters so far have been arm-twisted into giving me comments, I am not really sure if their issues would be similar to the issues of people who actually land on my site through organic search – as so far there have been so few that it is hard to tell. You provide all valid points – I just hope one day I will be able to put them all into action.

      You need to have a clear idea already from the beginning where are you going to go. You don’t need to know how to get there, but knowing what your ultimate goal is will really help you along the way.

      Sometimes, as you say, things can turn out totally different than you have planned from the beginning if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to achieve.

      If you’re feeling frustrated right now, this is a sign that you need to stop for a moment and evaluate what you want to transmit to your audience and what you want your site to be about. Take some time where you sit with yourself and ask yourself ‘’What is the purpose of this website? How do I want to help people?’’

      This will help you a lot along the way don’t you ever see how things slowly but surely fall into their place.

You have done that for me. I have no understanding of the mechanics of points 1 and 2. What are the steps involved in finding your specific audience (not niche, but the right demographics) and your audience’s needs. Thanks heaps

      Thanks for asking. This is a problem that many beginners face.

      The best way to find your target audience is to start asking yourself questions. Take a look at the products that you’re offering. Who could they help? What kind of people would be interested in buying such products?

      When it comes to understanding their needs, try to put yourself in their shoes. If you had a similar problem that the product you’re selling could solve, would you buy the product? What kind of information would you need in order to be sure that this is the right product for you?

      This will help you a lot with content creation, but also in building a trust with your audience.

      It is pretty simple actually. The only thing you have to do is to ask yourself the right questions, such as Who would be interested in buying my products? What problem can my product solve? Who has a similar problem?
