Well-written content that’s optimized for the search engines, rises to the top of search results and holds readers’ attention.

1. Know your audience

As simple as it sounds, you’ll be surprised how many people start writing their posts before they even think who they are trying to reach. It is important to know your audience and what their needs are, because you are creating the content for them, not for you. The following questions might help you along the way:

  • Who is my primary audience?
  • Is there a secondary audience that can influence my primary audience?
  • How will they find my site online?

how to create content for a website - target audience

For example, let’s say that your niche is intermittent fasting. That is why people who are interested in the intermittent fasting diet, are your primary audience. Your secondary audience might be people who just want to lose weight or live a healthier lifestyle. In death case your primary needs is related to your secondary audience and can eventually turn them into your primary audience as well.

It is important to make your content accessible and interesting for all of your audiences. Another important thing is to understand your audience. Try to think about what they need and what questions they have. Then you can write your articles based on your audience’s needs and solve their problems. This builds a connection between you and the reader and gains more trust and credibility.

2. Put yourself in the shoes of your audience

Sometimes, you need to take a step back and try to think like your readers. If you get stuck about what to write, take a moment and try to think like your audience. If you were in their place and wanted to know more about a specific topic, what would you type in Google?

Make a little research about the most common phrases and keywords that your targeted group uses in order to reach topics related to your niche.

Some additional questions you might want to ask yourself in order to understand your audience better are:

  • What kind of questions does my primary audience have?
  • Where are they most active online?
  • What kind of information do they need?

3. Write short and simple sentences

When it comes to writing articles for your website, forget about long and complicated sentences. Today’s reader demands sentences of 35 words or fewer. Another interesting fact is that the average American adult reads at a 7th to 9th-grade level.

Website content that is accessible and easy to read will naturally reach a wider audience. This can be a relief for many people who are not so good in writing. As long as you write grammatically correct and in a conversational and engaging way, you are good to go.

As mentioned earlier your level of writing does not need to be higher than a 9th grader’s level. That is why a really simple strategy is to give your article to a 15-year-old teenager and ask them if they understand it.

4. Vary your language

We all have certain words or phrases that would like to use a lot, but when it comes to keeping your visitors interested, variety is key!

If you find yourself using the same word over and over again, then try to come up with a synonym. This will affect both you and your readers positively. You learn how to vary your language and your readers will not be bored while reading your content.

If you find it difficult to come up with synonyms, then try to use

5. Engage your readers

Another really important factor on how to create content for a website is to write in an engaging way. You should keep your readers attention and make them want to read the whole post I would leave them wanting more.

You should also include calls to actions (CTA) in your content. I called to action is basically what you want your readers to do after they finish reading your post. Do you want them to leave a comment? Do you want them to like and share the post? Do you want them to join your email list? Or do you want them to click on a certain link and buy something from you?

All of that makes your reader feel active, while reading your content. It creates a connection between you and the reader and builds a long-term relationship.

Another very effective way of engaging your readers is to ask them questions about their own experience. People love to talk about themselves more than they like to talk about anything else. So ask them if they can relate to what you’re talking about or if they have experienced something similar that is related to the topic of your article.

6. Make text scannable

Weather I think your post, make sure it is easy to skim. Most people will scan your content before they actually start reading it. When they first land on your website, they will quickly scroll up and down skimming through the information. If they don’t find the specific information that they’re looking for when skimming through your article, they will leave easily.

If you don’t believe, try to pay attention to your behavior next time you open a web page. Are you reading every single word or are you quickly skimming through the post looking for the information you want?

It is important to make your text easy to skim. Instead of writing one big piece of text, try to divide it into smaller paragraphs. Each paragraph should contain five lines maximum. By doing so, your text becomes so much easier to read and your visitors are more likely to stay until the end of the post.

Another great tip is to use ‘’white space’’. This is the space that surrounds your paragraphs, images and other elements on your website. Using a comfortable amount of white space around text makes it more appealing and enjoyable to read.

It is also important to write headings and subheadings to your text. Make sure that it is clear when the first one ends and the second one begins. This will not only help your readers find easily the information they are looking for, but this will also help with SEO.

By dividing your content into sections, it is easier for the search engines to identify what your content is about and it will lead to better rankings.

7. Incorporate multimedia

You know what they say: ‘’ A picture is worth a thousand words’’. It is scientifically proven that 90% of the information transmitted to the human brain comes from visual sources, such as images and video. We humans process visual information 60,000 times faster than text.

That is why using visuals in your content is crucial. Used images to intensify or clarify the message you want your readers to receive.

Images also have to break up large chunks of text, which makes the whole text easier and more appealing to read.

Make sure that you only use images and videos that you have the rights for. A great place to find stock free images is If you want to be creative, you can also create your own visuals with Canva for free.

8. Layer website content

The good thing about having a website is that you can redirect your readers from one page to another by hyperlinking certain words or phrases in your content. You should mainly link to pages within your own website ( internal links), but you should also include links that lead out of your website ( external links).

Internal links will keep people engaged and walk them through your website, but they should also provide a lot of value to your readers so that they spend longer time on your website. External links are also important. Even though they lead your readers out of your own website, it is a good indicator for SEO that you are providing value. You should have a balance between internal and external links.

Keep in mind that links should always be relevant and helpful. Don’t overload your texts with links because people will not know what to click on. Keep it simple and use links only one suitable.

  1. This is a very helpful article. I started a new website and I’m still learning. And I can see where I didn’t necessarily get it right. But I understand why though, because I was staring at a blank screen and going brain dead. I couldn’t even see my audience.
The area I struggle with the most is the beginning words and the conclusion of an article. I’m sometimes at a loss for words. Coming to the end and saying, “Well that’s all folks,” won’t get me far I know. Maybe you could cover this in a future post?
Your article has helped me to understand the need to really understand who my audience is so I know how to reach them and engage them better.
    Thanks a million,

    • Thanks, Regina for the nice words. Many people get stuck with the introduction and the conclusion of their posts, so you are not alone. Though, it is important to understand that the introduction and the conclusion are two of the most important elements in a piece of content.

It is what captures the readers’ attention and what makes them want to read more. Try to come up with a good hook that will capture your visitors attention. A great tip is to introduce your article with a question or an interesting fact.

Another great tip is to try to think like your audience and put yourself in their shoes. After you have written your introduction, leave it for a while and then come back to it and read it. Ask yourself ‘’ Does this capture my attention enough to make me want to read the entire article?’’ If the answer is yes, then you have done a good job. If the answer is no, then try to come up with something better.

When it comes to the conclusion, a good way of ending your article is with a short summary of the most important things that you covered in that particular article. After that it is important to add a call to action (CTA). What do you want your readers to do after they have read your article? Do you want them to sign up for your email list? Do you want them to leave a comment and share your post? Make sure to be clear with what you want your audience to do.

Other than that, just follow the steps that I gave in this article and you will be surprised by the results. Wish you best of luck!

  2. I have often struggle with creating NEW content and these are amazing tips. Having conversational style of language helps to connect with the audience. Many new bloggers overlook the planning process, and while you might be able to get away with skipping the planning stage, doing your homework will actually save you time further down the road and help you develop good blogging habits.

    • Yes, that’s right. You should always talk in a friendly and conversational way, but it is important to create a skeleton for your work as this will speed up the writing process.

Content with these keys will be considered being rich keeping your readers interested and not only coming back for more but also telling other people about your website which I believe is a big win.

  4. In my humble opinion contenting writing or creation is a work of art and you really need to know how to write engaging content that will not only get and keep the attention of your audience but will have them talking about your website to other people. Writing content that will rank require skill and what you have listed when it comes to content marketing goes hand in hand or all work together to become an effective writer.

  5. You have provided a lot of interesting info on creating content. All your points are valuable, but my main takeaway is putting yourself in the shoes of your audience so that you can best “serve” them with the highest quality and value. With that intent, the other pieces fall in place, as you are inspired to do what is necessary to create that type of excellent content for your audience. Thanks for the great info.
