How To Reduce Bounce Rate For A Website
What Is Bounce Rate In Websites?
In simple words we can say that bounce rate is the overall percentage of people who visit your site, and then leave, without clicking on any other pages.
For example if your bounce rate is 50%, this means that half of your visitors leave immediately after they land on your site.
It’s good to keep your bounce rate under 40%. Keep in mind that the bounce rate of social media traffic is much higher than organic search traffic.
So let’s talk about what you can do to decrease your bounce rate…
1. Make Sure Your Title Delivers
If your title is ”how to make the perfect pizza dough”, but your article is about ”the history of pizza”, then it’s no surprise why people leave your site.
Don’t use clickbaits. Make sure your title matches your content!
2. Improve Your Site’s Speed ⚡
In order to get a lower bounce rate you need to make sure that your site loads quickly. 47% of people expect a page to load within 2 seconds. If it takes longer than 3 seconds, people are most likely to leave.
According to my experience, the number one reason why websites load slow is because of improper image optimization. Make sure your images are the right size and optimize them manually using a third party tool like Optimizilla.
3. Make Your Site Readable
Another very common reason why people leave a website is because it is hard to read. It can be because the font is too small, but it can also be that you are not using paragraphs and white space.
No one wants to read a big chunk of text. Break bigger chunk of text into paragraphs. The paragraphs should not be longer than 5 lines.
Use big enough font, so that people can read it without having to squint or zoom in. Make sure your font is readable both on mobile and desktop.
Use headings, subheadings and bullet points.
If you are using Yoast SEO, it will show you how readable your content is and give you suggestions for improvement.

4. Use images, infographics and video
You know what they say, ”An image is worth a thousand words”.
Including images, screenshots and infographics in your posts will improve user’s experience and therefore, decrease the bounce rate.
You can also embed a video in your blog posts. It can be a video summary of the blog post, but it can also be a video explaining a certain part of the article. The important thing is that it provides value and keeps the visitor longer on your site.
5. Create a Compelling Call-to-Action
You need to make it clear where people should go next after visiting your page. You must have a call to action (CTA) on every single page.
To make your CTA stand out, style it as a button. That way people can’t miss it and will be tempted to click on it.
Of course not all of your visitors will click on the button. That’s why it is important to have internal links in your content and an easy to use navigation bar.
6. Target Abandoning Users
Sometimes, despite all your efforts, people will still want to leave the page. It can be because they did not find what they are looking for, but it can also be because of something in their personal life.
Whatever the reason might be, it is always good to include an exit popup. It will appear only when the visitor is about to click away from your website.
The popup should offer something of value, such as an ebook or a PDF. The important thing is to collect the user’s email so that you can follow up with him.
