Whether you’re tired of your nine-to-five job or are looking for a lifestyle change, you have come to the right place. Many of you are here because you wonder how to start an online business at home.

There are many benefits of having an online business, such as being location independent, traveling the world, living the laptop lifestyle and having the freedom to do whatever you want, but it takes work.

Starting an online business can be the first step to reaching financial freedom, but it can be overwhelming as well. How do you actually do it?

In this article I’ll cover the basic steps you can take TODAY in order to start an online business at home. I’ll discuss the practical stuff, but also the mindset you need to have in order to succeed.

Let’s begin.

How To Start An Online Business At Home

Pick the right business for YOU

The most important thing in order to start an online business at home is to decide what type of business you want to get involved in. Here are a few examples:

  • Dropshipping
  • Selling on Amazon
  • Publishing Kindle books
  • Creating information products, such as online courses and training programs
  • Start a YouTube channel
  • Create mobile apps, a software or online tools
  • Do affiliate marketing where you don’t even have to create anything. You just promote other people’s products and earn commissions

The options are endless.

A big mistake that people make is trying to do it all at once. You have to understand that you won’t be able to do it all, especially if you are a beginner.

Every business model has its pros and cons and you have to figure out which one is the right one for you. In order to identify which one is the best for you, you might ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is it that I really want to achieve?
  • Why do I even want to start an online business at home?
  • What is my biggest reason for doing this?

Before you even start, you need to find a reason why you want to create an online business. It must be compelling enough, so that in times of adversity you can fall back on ‘’why you are doing all of this’’.

If you don’t have a strong enough reason, you are most likely to give up.

Some reasons can be: quitting your job, creating financial freedom, contributing to people’s lives, having more time for your family or maybe just make as much money as you possibly can.

There is no wrong or right answer, but you have to find your personal reason.

Don’t try to reinvent the wheel

What most people do when they first decide to start an online business, is that they go on YouTube and start watching a bunch of videos on how to make money online.

This is a good way to begin with, because it gets you excited and shows you what’s possible. Unfortunately what this does in the long run, is that it gets you overwhelmed and lost.

How To Start An Online Business At Home - bicycle wheel

Many of you think that you can just Google around and learn everything on your own. The problem with that, is that the internet is so broad that it would literally take you years to find all the relevant information you need.

That’s why investing in a course or a training program is the smartest thing you can do. A course is going to show you the exact step-by-step process and save you a lot of time.

Online training programs are often created by people who are already successful and have been through all the struggle and failures. They have gathered all the information in one place so that it is easy for you to follow along.

Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. It’s better to learn from other people’s experiences than from your own.

By investing in a program, you fast-track the process. You are learning from someone who has already built success and can help you along the way.

It is important to understand that in order to succeed, you have to invest in yourself more than anything else.

Take massive action

One of the biggest challenges in today’s society is that there is too much information. This puts you in a passive state where you consume more and more information until you get overwhelmed and decide that it is too challenging, and give up.

You don’t want to build the habit of only consuming, because that won’t lead to any results. You want to actually start applying what you’ve learned. Only by doing, will you understand something.

What you hear – you forget, what you see – you remember, what you do – you understand.

How To Start An Online Business At Home - idea plan action

People who invest in training programs are much more likely to take action and do something with the knowledge they have, than people who just consume free resources online.

The saying goes ”The more you pay, the more you pay attention!”

Even if you have gone through a course, read a lot of books and have the knowledge necessary, if you don’t apply it and if you don’t take action, you won’t see any results.

You can use the 1:3 method. For every hour that you spent learning, spent at least 3 hours applying what you’ve learned.

Stay committed

There are many people who have the potential, the knowledge and who invest in themselves and yet, they are not successful. The main reason why they struggle is because they are not committed. They start something and get excited, they do it for a while and when they see that things start getting complicated, they give up.

They don’t stick to what they have started long enough to actually succeed. They start jumping from one business to another, seeking the feeling of excitement. This is not the right strategy if you really want to succeed.

In order to succeed you have to be consistent. You have to make the decision that you will put everything it takes and be committed to it for at least a year.

Even if after a year or two you decide that this isn’t the right business for you, know that it wasn’t a waste of time. During that time you have gained so much experience, knowledge, habits and skills that had shaped who you are today.

Final Thoughts

There are many business opportunities and they all have great potential. You just have to pick the right one for you.

Investing in a course is going to save you a lot of time and energy. However, you must remember that knowing is not enough because if you don’t apply what you know, you won’t get any results .

You have to take action of what you learn. Whatever business you decide to start you have to commit to it for at least a year. Even if things don’t work out, that’s fine. Take the experience you’ve gained and apply it to your next business.

The important thing is to never give up.

  1. This is a great post. It is true that we can’t just reinvent the wheel. Starting a business is already hard, don’t make it even harder.
I do agree that taking a course will not only save us time but also will help us to be aware which direction we want to go and what is the right business for us.
Keep publishing this kind of post. It’s very informative and an eye opener as well.

  2. so is there a course on choosing the direction – a little taster of each type of online business.
i am struggling to decide on what to do- what would suit me and how to implement it.
or is this the key to why so many find it difficult to make money online.
with so many different thing that could be done – what is the selection process to get it down to one or two that you would have a chace of being committed to.

    • Hi Phill,

I’m sorry for the delay. Yes, I can agree with you. It can be challenging to choose a business. I personally had the same problem. It all depends on what you enjoy doing and what you are good at. It also depends on your financial situation. Some businesses are more beginner friendly such as Kindle publishing and affiliate marketing, but there are businesses out there that require money to start with. An example of that could be dropshipping.

I will cover your question in a future post but for now you can check this link out :

It helped me a lot when I chose my first business which was Kindle publishing. I believe that this is a great business to start with but it is not for everyone. I made a post especially about Kindle publishing. You can check it out and see if it might be something that suits you.

The other business that I recommend for beginners is affiliate marketing and this is the business model that I am currently in. If you want to learn more about how to learn affiliate marketing for beginners check out this post.

I hope you find a business that suits you and if you have any additional questions feel free to ask them 🙂
