Link building is very important for your rankings and brand awareness. Most people don’t pay attention to it and in this article I am going to talk about basic link building strategies for new websites.
I am going to explain what link building is and why it is important. I am also going to talk about inbound links and how you can get them even if your website is new.
If you are a beginner who have never heard of link building, this post will open your eyes. And if you already have experience as a blogger, but haven’t stated building back links yet, this article will give you the push you need to skyrocket your success.
What Is Link Building & Why Is It Important?
Link building is the process of acquiring links from other websites. Link building is an important factor to Google. It indicates popularity.
Think of a back link as a vote. The more votes you have, the more valuable your content is and the higher Google will rank you.
Other than getting getting higher ranking on Google, link building increases brand awareness. The more sites that link back to you, the more people will know about you and the more new potential clients will you have.
What Are Inbound Links & Why Are They Important?
Inbound links are link coming from other sites to your own website. You should preferably get inbound links from authority sites, because then a part of their Page Rank gets transferred to your site. It is also important that the authority sites that link to you are in the same niche as you.
It can be hard in the beginning to get authority sites to link to you. If you are brand new, it’s most likely that established sites won’t link to you, because that may hurt their own rankings.
A good strategy to implement in the beginning is to get links from sites that are slightly more established than you. Also, don’t start building back links immediately after you create a site. Focus on producing quality content, so that other sites have something of value to link to.
It is important to get fewer back links from different sites, than many back links from one site. Also, make sure that the back links are ”Do Follow”, because otherwise Google won’t transfer any Page Rank to you.
Paid VS Organic Inbound Links
There are high Page Rank sites that offer you to add your site to them for a fee. Other high Page Rank websites offer this service for free, but the back link will exist only for a limited period of time.
Avoid these ”opportunities”. Strive to get organic back links from related sites.
The best scenario is when other sites naturally link to you, but as mentioned above this is unlikely to happen in the beginning.
Many ”experts” advice that you should not focus on link building. Although this is true, I still think that you should spend some time networking with other sites and try to get back links from them.
Of course this is easier said than done. Below I will show you a strategy that you can use to get back links from established sites.
Link Building Strategies For New Websites
Start by identifying some of your competitors. You can do that by searching for different keywords in your industry and see which sites constantly show up. After you have done that, there are two things you can do.
The first way is what I call ”the organic way”. You will start commenting on these people’s posts, follow them on social media, share their posts, link to them, send them private messages about how much you love their work, and so on. Of course, all of that must be genuine compliments. Don’t ever say things you don’t mean, because people can feel when you are not sincere.
By doing this for a few months, these people will start noticing you and you will slowly establish a connection. They will become more likely to link to you or even share your articles with their followers.
After building a relationship with them, you will also be more confident asking them to link back to you.
The second way is to directly contact the site that you want to get a back link from. As we did in strategy #1, you should identify the top sites in your industry. After that send them a message saying how much you love their work and how they give you inspiration. Send them a link to one of your articles and ask them to link back to you if they liked your work
Again, be genuine in your compliments and don’t be pushy. After all, they have no idea who you are, so don’t expect that they will naturally link back to you.
This strategy may work faster, but it also has higher probability that they won’t even answer you. If the site you are trying to get a back link from has a high authority, they are probably extremely busy and get thousands of messages per day. So what makes your stand out?
That’s why I recommend you go with strategy #1. It is slower, but it has higher chance to work and you may as well build new friendships.
Here’s another great strategy by Neil Patel:
In short, link building is very important for your rankings and brand awareness. Your primary focus should always be delivering high quality and valuable posts, but in order to reach more people you must focus on link building as well.
