What is WordPress? It’s simply the easiest way to build a website!

2.5 million people search for WordPress every month. It gets more monthly views than Twitter and almost 40% of the internet is powered by WordPress. So the question is ”What is a WordPress website and why is it so popular?”

That’s exactly what this article is going to be about.

I will tell you everything that a beginner needs to know about WordPress. I will tell you how a WordPress website works, why it is so popular and why it is better than other website building platforms.

At the end I will even show you how you can build your own WordPress website in less than 5 minutes!

Let’s begin.

What Is a WordPress Website?

Explained with technical terms, WordPress is a Content Management System, or CMS for short. A content management system helps you manage important aspects of your website, without the need of knowing anything about programming.

In simple words, WordPress is the easiest way for people to create a website. More than 32% of the entire Web and 59% of CMS-built websites are powered by WordPress.

To understand better what WordPress is, let me give you a real life example. Think of WordPress as the mechanics in a car.

You can drive the car without thinking about all the mechanics. Even though you don’t see them, you know that they are inside, doing their thing. They all have important functions, but you don’ have to be a car mechanic in order to drive a car, right?

You just see a car!

How does that apply to WordPress?

WordPress acts like the mechanics behind a website. You don’t see it, but it powers the website behind the scenes.

The intention of a car engine is to move the car. The intention of WordPress is to make it easy for people to build and manage their websites.

Life was hard before WordPress!

Before WordPress existed, people had to know coding in order to create a website.

Fortunately, that is not the case anymore. Anyone can build a website with WordPress. It’s as simple as pushing a few buttons and at the end of this article, I will show you exactly how you can create your own WordPress website.

Most web hosts have WordPress already installed, which makes it super easy for you to customize a website. WordPress even has premade templates/themes that you can use.

Take a look at the image below to see some of the themes that WordPress offers.

You can just pick a theme and customize it so that it matches your niche. You don’t have to pay for web designers or anything like that.

You don’t have to know coding in order to build a website, which means that you have absolutely no excuse for not creating your own WordPress website.

There Are Two “Types” of WordPress Websites

When people talk about a WordPress website, they refer to one of two things. Here are the 2 options:

The first option is to purchase a web hosting, which has WordPress pre-installed. Bluehost is a good choice here. You can then create a WordPress website through your web hosting provider.

If you choose to create your website that way, you will have full control over your site.

The second option is to go to WordPress.com and build a website there. The downside with that is that you don’t have full control over it. Just like any other website, you will be able to change the theme, layout, content, etc, but WordPress is still in control over your website.

If you go with option number one and create your website through a web host, you will be able to do whatever you want with your website.

But if you go with option two and create your website through WordPress.com, there will be limitations. For example, you will not be able to upload custom themes and when creating content, you have to always make sure that it falls within WordPress’s terms of service.

So when people ask ”What is a WordPress website?”, it could be two things.

I recommend going with option number one. Here you can find a step-by-step tutorial on how to build a free WordPress website.

Why Should You Use WordPress?

As I already mentioned, WordPress is the most popular CMS. 32% of the entire Web and 59% of CMS-built websites are powered by WordPress. Even well-known sites, like Microsoft, are running on WordPress.

Something even more shocking is that WordPress receives more monthly views than Twitter.

But how does that apply to you? Why should YOU use WordPress? Here are 5 reasons:

  • WordPress Is Free And Open Source
  • It’s Extensible
  • It’s Easy To Install
  • It’s Flexible
  • It’s Easy To Find Help

Basically, WordPress makes it possible for people with no technical experience to build, manage and customize websites. You can literally do anything with a WordPress website.

Themes & Plugins

WordPress has countless amounts of Themes and Plugins.

Themes are pre-built web designs that you can use to change the appearance of your website without losing your content.

Plugins are used to add extra features to your website so that it is easier to navigate, or so that your website performs better.

A very popular plugin is the ”social sharing plugin” which creates these small social media icons so that people can share your content.

The good thing about Themes and Plugins is that anyone can create them and everyone can benefit from them. You don’t have to pay for web designer or web developer.

In other words we can say that WordPress saves people time and money and that’s why it has become so popular.

Why Is WordPress Better Than Other Platforms?

WordPress has become kind of the ”norm” when it comes to building websites.

Nowadays there are some other website building platforms, such as Wix and Squarespace. They all have pros and cons, but nothing beats WordPress.

When someone asks me what type of website to create, I don’t hesitate when saying that a WordPress website is the best option. It’s secure, fast, easy to use and it gives you endless possibilities for customization.

If you need further explanation, below is a video discussing the main differences between Wix, WordPress and Squarespace:

  4. Amazing content as always! I’ve been using WordPress for quite some time now but I can’t seem to find the right plugin to mess with my homepage design. I tried Thrive Arthitect in the past, but I didn’t like it too much if I’m being honest.

Any other plugin that you might know of?
